After seminary student A. J. Carlson began the early missionary work for the Augustana Synod in Belvidere IL, and during the spring of 1894, Pastor Ohman from Rockford and Pastor Lundell from Pecatonica came to preach for the Swedish people of Belvidere.

On August 29, 1894 fourteen people gathered for the purpose of officially organizing a Swedish Lutheran congregation in Belvidere. They gave the new congregation the name "The Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Zion Church of Belvidere."

Presiding at the organization meeting was Rev. Philip Thelander, pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Elgin, IL and seminarian J. E. Anderson acting secretary.
